I fell in love with this book sophomore year when I took Honors English 10, so I decided that it would be awesome to do my lit legacies project on it. Out of all the literature classics this one is definitely my favorite. Holden Caulfield's wit and sarcasm creates a character that any high school teenager could find humorous and for the same reasons relate to it as I did.
In the beginning chapters of the book Holden begins by telling us some personal stories including his failing grades at Pencey Academy. He also rambles on about his brother who is a writer and how he thinks he’s a phony because he’s got a new car and some good books he published. Holden’s dry sense of humor makes me find myself laughing during parts of the book as I am reading. “”You never knew if he was nodding a lot because he was thinking and all, or just because he was a nice guy that didn’t know his ass from his elbow” (page 8). Holden may be a little messed up in the head, but his careless and quick witted humor had me enjoying more books than others. I definitely believe The Catcher In The Rye is a book all high schools students should read.
