So the whole town is practically in love with Reverend Dimmesdale and just think he is the greatest thing that has ever happened to them (which he does not like since he knows the truth) and when he starts to become sick they think that it is a great idea to have Roger Chillingworth move in with him and take care of him, after all, he is a great physician and has a lot of knowledge in American Indian herbal medicine and British medicine. We all know that Mr. Chillingworth probably didn't move in with the reverend to take care of him, he has something else in mind. After spending a lot of time together, Chillingworth decides that he can only help the reverend if he examines him not only physically but also mentally and spiritually. So pretty much Chillingworth is going to drag Dimmesdale's "secret" out of him. After Chillingworth moves in with Dimmesdale some of the townspeople don't approve because they have noticed, just like Hester, that he has become ugly and "devlish."
In my opinion Chillingworth has become completely insane and obsessed with finding out Reverend Dimmesdale's secret. I don't know why he wants Dimmesdale to confess it so much because we all know that Chillingworth has a pretty good idea that Dimmesdale is the father of Pearl. Chillingworth spends almost all of him time trying to get the reverend to admit his sin to him. Dimmesdale refuses to tell him and comes to a point where he does not trust anyone and doesn't really talk to anybody.
In this chapter you notice that Pearl also thinks of Chillingworth as being evil. While Chillingworth and Dimmesdale are having a conversation they notice Pearl's laughter and stop to look. Pearl is placing burrs around Hester's scarlet A. Pearl chucks one at Reverend Dimmesdale and as he ducks so he won't be hit by it Pearl yells, "Come away, mother! Come away, or yonder old Black Man will catch you! He has got hold of the minister already. Come away, mother or he will catch you! But he cannot catch little Pearl!"
Chillingworth tells Dimmesdale that if he doesn't tell him what is on his mind he cannot heal him. Dimmesdale still will not tell him. Later that night when Dimmesdale fell asleep Chillingworth sneaks into his room and opens the reverend's shirt. Chillingworth laughs with delight. Before this the narrator mentions that the reverend inflicts pain on himself. This makes me wonder if he put some kind of A on his chest.
